Veterinary surgery

From consultation
to recovery

For most pets, surgery begins with a consultation. Your vet will examine your pet, discuss what they’ve found and explain whether surgery is the right next step.

If a procedure is recommended, we’ll talk you through what it involves, how to prepare your pet and what to expect during recovery. Our veterinary hospital includes a dedicated surgical theatre, with patients carefully monitored and supported throughout their procedure and recovery.

If you’re considering routine desexing, we can also help you decide on the appropriate timing for your individual pet.

What to expect

Your pet's
surgerical care

Every surgical patient is different, but the process usually begins with understanding what your pet needs and planning their care from there.

Consultation & assessment

Your vet will examine your pet and discuss their symptoms, health history and the treatment options available.

Diagnostic testing

Depending on your pet and the procedure, we may recommend blood tests or diagnostic imaging to help assess their health and plan their treatment.

Preparing for surgery

We’ll give you instructions before the procedure, including any fasting or medication requirements specific to your pet.

Anaesthesia and monitoring

For procedures requiring general anaesthesia, your pet will be closely monitored by our veterinary team throughout their surgery.

Recovery

After their procedure, your pet will be monitored and kept comfortable as they wake from anaesthesia and begin recovering.

Home & follow up

Before your pet leaves, we’ll explain their medications, activity restrictions, wound care and any follow-up they need.

Our surgical care

Surgical care at
Blakehurst Vet

At Blakehurst Vet, we perform routine desexing and a range of soft tissue procedures, with surgical care planned around the individual needs of each patient.

Dr Hamish Bathgate has a particular interest in soft tissue surgery and complex diagnostics, bringing many years of veterinary experience to surgical cases at the clinic.

Our hospital also has on-site pathology, X-ray and ultrasound to support investigation and treatment when required. If your pet needs specialist surgery or a level of care beyond what we can provide, we’ll discuss the options with you and help arrange appropriate referral care.

Do I need a consultation before my pet has surgery?

Usually, the first step is a veterinary consultation so we can examine your pet, determine what treatment they need and discuss whether surgery is appropriate. If your pet has already been assessed and surgery has been recommended, our team can guide you through the next steps. For routine procedures such as desexing, contact us and we can advise you about timing and booking.

We perform routine desexing and a range of soft tissue surgical procedures. The surgery your pet needs will depend on their individual condition, and your vet will explain the recommended treatment and options with you.

Your pet is carefully monitored and supported throughout their procedure and recovery. Our hospital includes a dedicated surgical theatre, and our team continues to care for your pet as they wake from anaesthesia.

Most patients at Blakehurst Vet are able to go home the same day, although this depends on the procedure and how your pet is recovering. We’ll let you know what to expect for your individual pet.

Not sure what your pet needs?

If surgery has already been recommended, or you’re concerned about a problem that may need treatment, book an appointment with one of our vets. We’ll assess your pet, explain the options and help you understand the next step.
