Dr Hamish and our team

At Blakehurst Vet, we help you work through a cancer concern or diagnosis, from initial investigations to treatment and ongoing support.

Dr Hamish Bathgate has treated pets with cancer for many years and offers chemotherapy for suitable patients here at our clinic. He’ll review your pet’s diagnosis and explain what treatment could offer them.

As an independent, family-owned practice, we take a personal approach to your pet’s care. We’ll talk openly about the options and keep their comfort and quality of life at the centre of each decision.

How we can help

Cancer care services
at Blakehurst Vet

Whether you’ve noticed a new lump or your pet already has a diagnosis, our team can help. We’ll recommend the investigations, treatment and support appropriate for their needs.

Lump checks and sampling

We examine new or changing lumps and may recommend a cell sample or biopsy to find out what they are.

Diagnostic testing

Blood tests, X-rays and ultrasound can help us assess your pet’s health and investigate concerns. Some tests require external laboratories or referral.

Individualised chemotherapy

Dr Hamish provides chemotherapy for suitable dogs and cats, with treatment tailored to their diagnosis and individual needs.

Treatment monitoring

We review your pet’s progress, monitor how they feel and use blood tests where needed to guide their ongoing treatment.

Comfort and support

We can help manage pain, nausea and other symptoms, with nutritional advice and palliative care when appropriate.

Specialist referrals

If your pet needs specialist assessment or treatment, we’ll explain the recommendation and help you understand the next steps.

Our cancer care

Treatment close to home
with quality of life first

For suitable patients, chemotherapy at Blakehurst Vet means treatment and monitoring here at your local clinic. Dr Hamish will discuss whether this is an appropriate option for your pet.

The aim is to control the cancer while preserving your pet’s quality of life. Many dogs and cats tolerate chemotherapy well, although side effects can occur and treatment needs careful monitoring.

We’ll explain what to expect, what changes to watch for at home and when to contact us. How your pet feels between appointments is an important part of assessing their response and deciding whether treatment needs adjusting.

How do I arrange a cancer care consultation?

Call Blakehurst Vet on (02) 9547 2750 or book an appointment online. For chemotherapy enquiries, ask about a consultation with Dr Hamish. If your pet has already had tests elsewhere, let our team know when booking so we can advise which records would be helpful.

Many pets tolerate chemotherapy well, but side effects can include reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea and tiredness. Some medicines also lower white blood cell counts, increasing infection risk. Serious complications can occur. We’ll discuss the risks of your pet’s treatment, monitor their response and explain when to contact us.

Some investigations and treatments can take place at our clinic, including chemotherapy for suitable patients. Others require specialist facilities or expertise. If referral would benefit your pet, we’ll explain why and discuss how our team can remain involved in their care.

Yes. Our team can still help manage your pet’s symptoms and support their comfort. This may include pain relief, medication for nausea, nutritional advice and palliative care. We’ll also help you assess their quality of life and talk through decisions as their needs change.
