Our story

Independent, family-owned,
and proud of it

Blakehurst Vet has been caring for pets in the St George and Sutherland Shire for over 30 years. Still family-run, still independent and still genuinely invested in every pet that comes through our door.

How it started

A practice built on trust and community

Blakehurst Vet has been part of the local community for over 30 years. When Dr Hamish Bathgate bought the practice in 2007, it was already well-loved and he was determined to keep it that way.

In 2019, the Bathgate family took a big step — converting an old warehouse on King Georges Road into a purpose-built veterinary hospital. It was a significant investment, and a statement of intent: this practice is here to stay.

The building that houses the clinic today was designed from the ground up around the needs of patients and their families. Modern facilities, on-site parking and a calm, welcoming environment that makes even nervous pets feel at ease.

Our journey

A few milestones along the way

1990s

In the beginning

Hamish’s university friend Dr Cathy established a house call and vet practice in Blakehurst, laying the foundations for what would eventually become the clinic it is today.

2007

Dr Hamish Bathgate takes ownership

Hamish buys the practice and continues building on the community trust already established, bringing his own philosophy of personalised, independent care.

2009

Hotel for Cats founded by Holly Bathgate

Hamish’s wife Holly opens the Hotel for Cats alongside the clinic, offering a luxury boarding option for the local community’s cats.

2019

A purpose-built home on King Georges Road

The Bathgate family takes over an old warehouse and rebuilds it from the ground up as a modern veterinary hospital, housing both the clinic and the Hotel for Cats under one roof.

Today

Still family-run, still independent

2,500+ families, 750+ surgeries a year, multiple local business awards and the same ethos as day one. Your pet is known here.

What we believe

Why independent actually matters

Corporate vet groups are growing fast across Australia. Here’s why staying independent makes a real difference to your pet’s care.

01

Care over quotas

No shareholder targets or upselling incentives. Our recommendations are based entirely on what’s best for your pet, full stop.

02

Continuity of care

See the same vets each visit. We know your pet’s history, temperament and quirks. That familiarity genuinely changes the quality of care.

03

Time to actually listen

We’re not rushing through a corporate booking schedule. When you have questions or concerns, we have time for them.

04

A team that stays

High staff turnover is common at corporate practices. Our team has been here for years because they actually want to be.

Part of the community

Proudly local, for over 30 years

We’ve been part of the St George and Sutherland Shire community long enough to have looked after multiple generations of pets from the same families. That kind of continuity isn’t something a corporate group can replicate.

We support local animal welfare initiatives and are proud recipients of multiple local business awards, voted for by the community we serve.
